The Great Philospopher, Susanne Langer essays Most people are familiar with the greatest minds in philosophy such as Aristotle, Plato, or even John Locke. In reality, most well-known philosophers happen to be male. Women philosophers such as Hannah Arendt and Susanne Langer have faded from textbooks and have been somewhat forgotten as the decades have passed. They have not always been credited for their work. This is due to the heavy oppression that they received from the men of their time who often took credit for the work of women. Women were often looked down on and were sometimes unauthorized to have political or educational rights, so they went discredited for their work. However, unlike most women, philosopher Susanne Langer did not let men dictate her actions or educational proceedings. Susanne Langer (1895-1985) was born and raised in New York, the daughter of two German immigrants. Langer attended a private school on the upper west side, and when she graduated, her educational struggles began. Her father held the belief that Susanne should not go to college. Nonetheless, despite his wishes, she enrolled at Radcliffe College (with the encouragement of her mother) and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in 1920. In 1924, when Langer was a graduate student at Radcliffe, she began to shape the direction of her philosophical development. This change was due to the influence of her professor Alfred North Whitehead. Professor Whitehead is responsible for helping to shape Langer's perspective on the history of human thought, the origins of the modern world and the resulting contemporary situation in philosophy. These concepts were later published in her first book, 'The Practice of Philosophy'. Langer didn't look at Whitehead as only a professor, but also as a teache r, lecturer, writer, dissertation adviser, colleague, and even a friend. There are some basic flaws or probably involuntary mistakes in the story line, for example it is shown in the movie that the infant Moses was rescued from the basket by Pharaoh’s sister, in fact, in biblical text, he was rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and she knew it at that time too that he was a Hebrew. (Exodus; 2: 5-7). De Mille’s version of the Biblical story of Moses, is a class act, he has given it his own flavour where he deliberately emphasized on some of the aspects of this story right from the Exodus version. Like he portrays how the divine being of God engulfs Moses, how God speaks to Moses and a burning fire surround Moses which will not burn him, which in reality could easily overwhelm and tarnish a person in seconds. De Mille’s such metaphors are very clearly seen all through the movie, which shows the true heart of the film as biblical in nature. This Divine radiance of God which inhibits Moses is illustrated many times in the movie, which is seems to be the foundation of De Mille’s belief in the story. In contrast to above, a lot of biblical facts are altered just for the viewer’s better understanding and attraction, for example, there is a point in the original story where Moses killed an Egyptian for brutally beating a Hebrew slave, but in the movie that Egyptian was replaced by Pharaoh’s cruel master builder. As soon as I had unbelted him from his car seat, Andy ran down the hill toward the small pond below us. Before I could lock the car, I heard him scream and looked up immediately. A large Canada goose was hissing menacingly at him, and three others were just a few feet away. I ran to rescue Andy and picked him up. That’s when I noticed that Andy’s shoes were covered with goose droppings. I then looked down. Mine were too.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  After I cleaned our shoes and took Andy home, I told my mother about the incident with the geese, to which she replied, â€Å"You should have seen the park a few months ago. The geese were everywhere. Before the 1950s, when they were hunted nearly to extinction, the geese nested in Canada and wintered in the United States. Later, conservationists found a surviving flock in Minnesota and began raising the geese to restore the population. Unfortunately, these farm-raised geese had lost their instinct to migrate and began living in the United States the year round (Schnell). Since goose hunting had been made illegal, the Canada geese found friendly habitat in the spreading suburbs, parks, and golf courses, which had plenty of grass and other food and few predators. The result was a population explosion in communities that had not seen a Canada goose in decades.

Globalization is such a commonly used term in the twentiethcentury. It simply means that the world has become integrated economically, socially, politically and culturally through the advances of technology, transportation and communication. It is undeniable to say that globalization has resulted in both positive and negative effects which must be addressed accordingly. To begin with, globalization has contributed to the worlds economies in many beneficial ways. The advances in science and technology have allowed businesses to easily cross over territorial boundary lines. Consequently, companies tend to become more productive, competitive thereby raising quality of goods, services and the worlds living standard. Secondly, several companies from the more developed countries have already ventured to establish foreign operations or branches to take advantage of the low cost of labor in the poorer countries. This kind of business activity will provide more influx of cash or investment funds into the less developed countries. However, one cannot deny the negative effects which havederived from globalization. One crucial social aspect is the risk and danger of epidemic diseases which can easily be spread as the mode transportation is easier and faster in todays advance society. This is evidenced in the recent birds flu disease which has infected most Asian countries over a short time frame. As large corporations invest or take over many off shore businesses, a modern form of colonization will also evolve which may pose certain power pressure on the local governments of the less developed countries. Unemployment rates in the more developed regions like Europe may also escalate as corporations choose to outsource cheaper work force from Asian countries. In conclusion. I like to reiterate that globalization is inevitable and we must urge individuals, companies and governments to use a more balanced approach by taking appropriate steps to deal with matters relating to the financial or economical gains verses the social, political or ecological concerns of the world.
